Order of Operations Calculator
Evaluate an expression with PEMDAS and see every step, from parentheses and exponents to the final answer.
Answer
14
- Step by step
- 3 + 6 × (5 + 4) ÷ 3 − 7 = 3 + 6 × (9) ÷ 3 − 7 = 3 + 6 × 9 ÷ 3 − 7 = 3 + 54 ÷ 3 − 7 = 3 + 18 − 7 = 21 − 7 = 14
- Steps taken
- 6
The expression equals 14.
Calculation breakdown
| Step | Formula | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Step | 3 + 6 × (9) ÷ 3 − 7 | 14 |
| Step | 3 + 6 × 9 ÷ 3 − 7 | 14 |
| Step | 3 + 54 ÷ 3 − 7 | 14 |
| Step | 3 + 18 − 7 | 14 |
| Step | 21 − 7 | 14 |
| Step | 14 | 14 |
How it works
Type an expression. The calculator rewrites it one operation at a time.
Worked example
3 + 6 × (5 + 4) ÷ 3 − 7:
- Parentheses: 5 + 4 = 9, giving 3 + 6 × 9 ÷ 3 − 7
- Multiplication, left to right: 6 × 9 = 54, then 54 ÷ 3 = 18
- Addition and subtraction, left to right: 3 + 18 = 21, then 21 − 7 = 14

Frequently asked questions
What is the order of operations?
Work out parentheses first, then exponents, then multiplication and division from left to right, then addition and subtraction from left to right. In the United States this is remembered as PEMDAS, and in the United Kingdom as BODMAS.
Is multiplication done before division?
No. They have equal rank, so you do whichever comes first from left to right. In 8 ÷ 2 × 4, divide first to get 4 × 4 = 16, not 8 ÷ 8 = 1.
Why does 2 + 3 × 4 equal 14 and not 20?
Multiplication comes before addition. 3 × 4 = 12 first, then 2 + 12 = 14. Add parentheses, (2 + 3) × 4, to get 20.
How are exponents handled?
Before multiplication. In 2 + 3² × 2, square the 3 first to get 9, then 9 × 2 = 18, then 2 + 18 = 20. Stacked exponents like 2^3^2 group from the right.
What does the calculator support?
Numbers, decimals, + − × ÷ and ^, parentheses and negative numbers. It does not use letters or functions, and it stops with a message if a division by zero would happen.
