Frequently asked questions
How do you calculate a test score?
Subtract the wrong answers from the total questions to find the number right, then divide by the total and multiply by 100. With 50 questions and 6 wrong, 44 ÷ 50 × 100 gives 88%.
What letter grade is 88%?
On the default plus/minus scale, 88% is a B+, because B+ runs from 87 to 89. Schools use different scales, so check your syllabus or use the custom option to enter your own cutoffs.
Which grade scale does the calculator use?
The default is a published university scale. George Fox University lists A as 93-100, A- as 90-92, B+ as 87-89, B as 83-86, and so on down to F below 60. There is no national standard.
How is a score between two whole numbers graded?
The calculator compares the exact percent with each cutoff. A score of 92.5% is an A-, because it does not reach 93. The displayed percent is rounded only for reading.
Can I set my own A, B, C and D cutoffs?
Yes. Open the advanced options, choose My own, and enter the lowest percent for each letter. The cutoffs must go down from A to D.
Letter grades depend on your school or teacher. Use their scale for official results.
