Calculation breakdown
| Step | Formula | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Average of the grading periods | Sum of 2 grades ÷ 2 | 90% |
| Weighted semester grade | 90% × (100% − 20%) + 80% × 20% | 88% |
How it works
Choose how many grading periods you have, enter each grade, then the exam grade and its weight.
Worked example
Two periods of 88% and 92%, and an exam of 80% worth 20%:
- Period average: (88 + 92) ÷ 2 = 90%
- Periods count for 100% − 20% = 80%: 90 × 0.80 = 72
- Exam: 80 × 0.20 = 16
- Semester grade: 72 + 16 = 88%

Frequently asked questions
How do you calculate a semester grade?
Average your grading periods, then combine that average with the exam using the exam's weight. With periods of 88 and 92, an 80 on the exam and the exam worth 20%, the semester grade is 88%.
What weight should I use for the exam?
Use the weight in your syllabus or school policy. Schools set it differently, often between 10% and 25%. The calculator does not assume a figure, so the box is yours to set.
How are the grading periods weighted?
They share the rest of the weight equally. With a 20% exam, two periods are worth 40% each, and four periods are worth 20% each.
What if there is no exam?
Leave the exam box blank. The semester grade is then the plain average of your grading periods.
How is this different from a GPA?
This gives a percent grade for one course. A GPA averages grade points across courses and credits. For that, use the GPA calculator.
Check your school's grading policy. Some schools round, drop a lowest grade or weight periods differently.
