Calculation breakdown
| Step | Formula | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Calculation | 25:00 ÷ 3.1 = 8:04 per unit | 8:04 /mi |
| Split time at mile | 1 × 8:04 | 8:04 |
| Split time at mile | 2 × 8:04 | 16:08 |
| Split time at mile | 3 × 8:04 | 24:12 |
| Split time at mile | 3.1 × 8:04 | 25:00 |
How it works
Choose what you want to find. Enter any two of time, distance and pace. Pick a race preset or type your own distance, and switch between miles and kilometers with the unit toggle.
Time and pace are typed as h:mm:ss, m:ss or minutes. A mile is 1,609.344 meters and a kilometer is 1,000 meters.
Worked example
A 4:00:00 marathon (42.195 km):
- Time in seconds: 4 × 3,600 = 14,400
- Pace per kilometer: 14,400 ÷ 42.195 = 341.3 s, which is 5:41 per km
- Pace per mile: 341.3 × 1.609344 = 549.2 s, which is 9:09 per mile
- Average speed: 3,600 ÷ 341.3 = 10.5 km/h
Rounding
Paces are shown to the nearest second. Calculations use the unrounded values, so a pace of 5:41 per km over the half marathon gives 1:59:54, not 2:00:00.

Frequently asked questions
How do you calculate running pace?
Divide your total time by the distance. A 25:00 5K is 1,500 seconds over 5 km, which is 5:00 per kilometer, or about 8:03 per mile. The calculator also works the other way, finding your time from a pace and distance, or your distance from a time and pace.
What is the half marathon distance?
A half marathon is exactly half the length of a marathon, at 13.1094 miles or 21.0975 km, according to World Athletics. A marathon is twice that, 42.195 km or about 26.2188 miles. The race presets in the calculator use these exact figures.
How do I convert pace between miles and kilometers?
A mile is 1.609344 km, so multiply a pace per kilometer by 1.609344 to get the pace per mile, and divide to go back. A 5:00 per km pace is 8:03 per mile. The result panel shows your pace in both units.
What is a good marathon pace?
It depends on your experience and goal. To finish in 4 hours you need about 5:41 per kilometer or 9:09 per mile. Use the marathon preset and your target time to see the pace and the split at every mile or kilometer.
What is pace on a treadmill?
Treadmills show speed in miles or kilometers per hour. Enter the speed's equivalent pace, such as 10:00 per mile for 6 mph, to see the time for a distance. The result panel also shows your average speed so you can set the treadmill.
How are the splits calculated?
Splits assume an even pace for the whole run. Each split is the pace multiplied by the number of miles or kilometers covered, and the last row is the finish if the distance is not a whole number.
Estimates for information only. Real races include hills, turns and uneven pacing, and course measurements can differ slightly.
