Frequently asked questions
How do you calculate unit price?
Divide the price by the amount in the package, then convert so every item uses the same unit. A $4.99 package of 16 ounces costs $0.31 per ounce.
How do I compare different package sizes or units?
Pick the unit for each item and the calculator converts them to a common base. A 2 pound pack for $8.49 is $0.27 per ounce, which beats a 16 ounce pack at $0.31 per ounce.
How many ounces are in a pound and fluid ounces in a gallon?
A pound is exactly 16 ounces, and a U.S. gallon is exactly 128 fluid ounces. One ounce is 28.349523125 grams.
Why can't I compare ounces with fluid ounces?
An ounce measures weight and a fluid ounce measures volume. They are not the same except for water, so the calculator asks you to compare like with like.
Is the lowest unit price always the best buy?
Not always. A bigger pack only saves money if you use it all before it spoils. Check the quality, expiry date and storage space too.
