Frequently asked questions

How do you average times?

Turn each time into seconds, add them up, divide by how many there are, then convert back to hours, minutes and seconds. Times of 1:12:30, 58:45, 1:05:10 and 1:20:00 average 1:09:06.

How should I type the times?

Use one time per line as h:mm:ss, such as 1:12:30, or m:ss, such as 58:45. A plain number such as 25 is read as 25 minutes.

Can I average lap or race times?

Yes. Enter each lap or split on its own line. The calculator also shows the total, shortest and longest.

Why does it show seconds with decimals?

The average is rounded to the nearest second when it is displayed. The exact average can have a fraction, such as 1:09:06.25.

Does it work for clock times like 9:30 am?

No. It averages durations, not times of day. To find the time between two clock times, use the elapsed time calculator.
