Worked example

A single filer with $85,000 of income and the standard deduction:

  1. Taxable income: 85,000 − 16,100 = $68,900
  2. Tax: $5,800 on the first $50,400, plus 22% of the $18,500 above it ($4,070) = $9,870
  3. Effective rate: 9,870 ÷ 85,000 = 11.61%, with a marginal rate of 22%

Frequently asked questions

What is an effective tax rate?

It is the share of your income you pay in tax, the total tax divided by your income. It is lower than your top tax bracket because only the income inside each bracket is taxed at that bracket's rate.

What is the difference between effective and marginal tax rate?

The marginal rate is the rate on your last dollar of taxable income, the bracket you fall in. The effective rate is the average across all your income. A single filer with $85,000 of income has a 22% marginal rate but about an 11.6% effective rate.

What is the standard deduction for 2026?

It is $16,100 for single filers and married people filing separately, $32,200 for married couples filing jointly, and $24,150 for heads of household. The calculator uses it unless you enter your own deduction.

What is not included?

Tax credits, the extra deduction for age 65 or older or blindness, state and local taxes, and payroll taxes such as Social Security and Medicare. The result is federal income tax only.

Where do the 2026 brackets come from?

They come from IRS Revenue Procedure 2025-32, which lists the 10%, 12%, 22%, 24%, 32%, 35% and 37% brackets for each filing status for tax year 2026.
