Cubic Yard Calculator
Convert length, width and depth into cubic yards, cubic feet and cubic meters for any rectangle, circle or triangle.
Cubic yards
1.48 cubic yards
- Cubic feet
- 40.0 ft³
- Cubic meters
- 1.13 m³
- Area covered
- 120.0 sq ft
120 sq ft covered 4 in deep is 1.48 cubic yards, which is 40 cubic feet or 1.13 cubic meters.
Calculation breakdown
| Step | Formula | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Area | 10 × 12 | 120.00 sq ft |
| Depth in feet | 4 in ÷ 12 | 0.3333 ft |
| Volume | 120 × 0.3333 | 40.00 ft³ |
| Cubic yards | 40 ÷ 27 | 1.48 yd³ |
How it works
Choose a shape, enter its size and the depth, and read the volume in cubic yards, cubic feet and cubic meters.
Worked example
A rectangle 10 ft long and 12 ft wide, filled 4 inches deep:
- Area: 10 × 12 = 120 sq ft
- Depth in feet: 4 ÷ 12 = 0.3333 ft
- Volume: 120 × 0.3333 = 40 cubic feet
- Cubic yards: 40 ÷ 27 = 1.48 cubic yards
Rounding
Volumes are shown to two decimal places. Calculations use the unrounded values.

Frequently asked questions
How do you calculate cubic yards?
Multiply the length, width and depth, all in feet, to get cubic feet, then divide by 27. A yard is exactly 3 feet, so a cubic yard is 3 × 3 × 3 = 27 cubic feet. If your depth is in inches, divide it by 12 first.
How many cubic yards are in a 10 by 12 foot area 4 inches deep?
The area is 120 square feet and the depth is 4 ÷ 12 = 0.333 feet, so the volume is 40 cubic feet. Dividing by 27 gives 1.48 cubic yards. The calculator shows the same steps in the breakdown.
How do I work out cubic yards of concrete?
Use the same formula with the slab length, width and thickness. A 9 foot by 9 foot slab 4 inches thick is exactly 1 cubic yard. For bags, weight or a waste allowance, use the concrete calculator on this site.
How do I convert cubic feet to cubic yards?
Divide the cubic feet by 27. For example, 54 cubic feet is 2 cubic yards. To go the other way, multiply cubic yards by 27.
How many cubic meters is a cubic yard?
A cubic yard is 0.764555 cubic meters, which follows from a yard being 0.9144 meters exactly. The calculator shows cubic meters alongside cubic yards.
Does this calculator give weight?
No. This one gives volume only. For the tons of gravel, sand, stone or asphalt that fill a volume, use the matching material calculator, which applies a density to the same volume.
Estimates only. Order materials by your supplier's own measure and add any allowance you need for waste or settling.
