Worked example
People HR’s example: a full-time salary of £40,000 for a 40-hour week, working 20 hours.
- Share of full time: 20 ÷ 40 = 50%
- Pro rata salary: £40,000 × 50% = £20,000 a year
- A month: £20,000 ÷ 12 = £1,666.67
- Hourly rate: £20,000 ÷ (20 × 52) = £19.23
By days: £35,000 full time, working 3 days out of 5, is £35,000 × 60% = £21,000.

Frequently asked questions
How do I work out a pro rata salary?
Multiply the full-time salary by your hours divided by the full-time hours. People HR’s example is a £40,000 job on a 40-hour week; working 20 hours gives £40,000 × (20 ÷ 40) = £20,000 a year.
What does pro rata mean on a job advert?
It means the salary shown is the full-time equivalent, and you will be paid a share of it based on the hours or days you actually work. A job advertised at £30,000 pro rata for 3 days out of 5 pays £18,000 a year.
Should I use hours or days?
Use hours if your contract sets weekly hours, and days if it sets days per week of the same length. If your days are shorter than a full-time day, hours give the more accurate answer.
How is pro rata holiday worked out?
Multiply the full-time holiday by the same fraction as your pay. If full-time staff get 28 days and you work 3 days out of 5, you get 28 × 0.6 = 16.8 days. GOV.UK sets the statutory minimum at 5.6 weeks a year, and part-time workers get it pro rata.
Is the pro rata salary before or after tax?
Before tax. Income Tax and National Insurance are worked out on your actual pro rata pay, so use the take-home pay calculator to see what you would receive.
Results are estimates for information only. Your contract and payslip decide your actual pay and holiday.
